Our History

Methodism as a movement began in England in the mid 1700's, then migrated to the American frontier where it found fertile soil for growth.

Morehead was probably a stop for one of the ealry circuit riders who covered the country on horseback near the turn of the 19th Century, but the first written records of the church are much later.  In 1861, Morehead is listed as a mission church (a congregation without property) in the Irvin District of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.

In 1894, the church bought the property on which the current sanctuary now stands.  A frame building was erected on the spot two years later.  This building served the congregation until the 1930's, when it was replaced with the current sanctuary.

At that time, Morehead was the anchor church for a circuit of six churches, including one at Farmers, Mt. Pisgah, Olympia, Soldier, and Rockville.

In the 1950's, a Christian Education wing was added to the church, bringing the facility to its current configuration.

Over the years, Morehead church has nurtured a number of outstanding leaders in the local, state, and even national Methodist movement.  Of special note to Kentucky Methodists are leaders like David Sageser, Donald Durham, and Harold Tatman.  Rev. James Heidenger served briefly as director of youth in Morehead, before going on to become national Executive Director of Good News.

But the real strength of the Morehead church has always been its outstanding gifted and devoted people.
