Our church's missions to Peru actually started ten years ago when a group from Paintsville, KY visited Peru to provide medical relief. The Paintsville group has returned each year since. Two years later, members of our church helped the Mayo Methodist Church staff a medical mission to Puerto Bermudez, Peru. In 2006, the Roswell (GA) United Methodist Church joined us for our medical mission to Huamantanga, Canta District, Northeast of Lima. Our teams increased in size as we returned to Huamantanga the following year, and peaked with 30 missionaries in 2008 in Lachaqui. In fact, the team including Peruvian missionaries and support staff approached 50 individuals, offering medical assistance, dental care, eyeglasses, health education, and Christian counseling and services.
In 2012 we have the opportunity again of joining our old friends at the Roswell United Methodist Church, Georgia, in a medical mission June 22-30 Here is the information as provided us by John Pearson of that church:
PATARCOCHA was where our San Juan de Iscos Medical Team of 2010 had our feast called the PACHAMANCA, “dinner from the ground”. Altitude is about 11,500 feet. SAN JUAN DE ISCOS is just below Billy-- the roof-tops you see in the trees is the square where we conducted our medical mission. TINYARI, site for our 2011 Medical Mission is to Billy’s left at about 11,800 feet, 4 miles away, not in picture. The Drums have projects & schools in Iscos, Patarcocha, and Tinyari.
HUAYTAPALLANA is the huge mountain you see in the far distance, 19,000 feet or so. On tourist day you will have the opportunity to “go to the glacier” at 16,500 feet, see the 700 foot water fall from the 3 glacial lakes. HUANCAYO is most of the city you see located in the MANTARO VALLEY, one of the richest farm areas in Peru, lying in between the East & West Andes Mountains. Just past the brown fields you see on top of the hill is CHUPACA, a surburb of Huancayo, where we will be staying, a town of 10,000 people, 20,000 in the area where some of our patients will come from.
TINYARI, PERU, location for RUMC’s 2012 Seventh Annual MEDICAL MISSION, June 22-30, 2012. We will need family doctors, nurses, a pharmacist, dentists, and many other non-medical folks to serve in triage, optical, our full pharmacy, children’s ministry and other areas as support to our medical personnel. Arthur & Mary Alice Ivey (Huancayo), Billy, Laurie, and Sarah Drum (Patarcocha), and Ash & Audra McEuen and several children (Huancayo) will be serving with us and our team of 40 Peruvian National missionaries! What a great mission this will be! We plan for 20 on our US Team.
One of the modes of transportation in Tinyari. Even though we will be only 20 minutes from Chupaca and 30 minutes from Huancayo (550,000 people), you will FEEL and APPRECIATE the remoteness of Tinyari, small village of about 150 homes with over 20,000 people in the area from Iscos, Ahac, Jorpac, Patarcocha, & Chupaca.
So you can begin looking at flights, we will meet at the Lima International Airport by 11:00 PM on June 22nd. This flexibility of not having to fly on a certain flight with a group, will allow you to fly as you wish. You will be in Lima to schedule your return flight by 6:00 PM on Saturday, June 30th. Most if not all flights to the US, leave after 10pm and fly overnight. Cost for this mission trip will be whatever you spend for your flight, plus a missions fee of $800-1000.00. Arthur Ivey and I will be making arrangements and getting exact prices in January. So flight cost plus missions fee = cost of mission. Additional costs could include passport and vaccinations.
“I don’t have the money” has never kept anyone from going on mission. We have a fund raising process that I ask ALL to use as this and prayer are two ways your family and friends can participate in your mission trip. All cannot GO but ALL can help with prayer, and some can donate support.
MACHU PICCHU is the most popular side trip after our mission. I do have information about this wonderful trip---just let me know. Machu Picchu is one of the “Wonders of the World”, and being this close…..GO if you can! Many of us have been to Machu Picchu which includes THE SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCA and CUSCO, the former capital city of the Inca. Another popular trip is to stay a couple of extra days in Lima, in the area of Mira Flores, very safe and very tourist!
Please contact me if you need further information! I look forward to hearing from YOU!
We GO because HE said GO!
